»'Datelie'

after migrating, then hibernating and a little instigating I thought it was time for another blog

The other day I was flipping through the channels- now normally I continue flipping at the smug mug of monsieur Chris Hansen and his pseudo philanthropic endevours but on this particular evening the cosmos compelled me to take my thumb off the "return" button (which meant I was going to watch a wholesome family channel original) and stay on dateline and their "i jackers" story.

basically what was going on was Dateline was staging unattended Ipods, with big brother in the sky catching those who decided to take the ipods. If that was not enough to make the blood coagulate, the ipod software was actually a tracking device to track down those alleged "miscreients" of society. And if this little societal fairytale wasn't diabolical enough- the deceit continues in that once the people were tracked down dateline had a fake ipod anniversary bus where the miscreents were told they won itunes gift cards. They were also told to watch a video in which they were faced with the video of themselves stealing the ipods. Faced with embarassment the person is meant to explain their pedestrian act.

This horrible display of disposable TV americana was wrong on so many levels. First the people they showed on the program were usually minority, so not nly does it perpetuate the Hobbes idea of humans as naturally evil, but that minorities are even more so.

The whole idea of surveillance is one that takes away our freedom to be human but it is a device that takes us away from the idea of community and tells us that our fellow humans are not to be trusted. Ironically enough, the capitalist conglomerate giant that dateline is part of is the real reason decieitis rampantand the world is cracking.
First we are told that you are nobody unless you have an ipod, but then the price is so ridiculous that the only people who can be somebodies are those with a lot of disposable cash, which isn't the majority. So when someone is desperate to be somebody that they steal an unattended Ipod they are made a mockery off.
