It's been a long couple of days, installing the show and tidying up all that I can to make the process of starting the computer, keeping all programs running, and shutting it down safely as automated as possible. I have a script that automatically launches all the programs I need (Quartz Composer, Max, Live, then all project files for these programs) in that order, then moves the Quartz Composer viewer to the second monitor (projector) and automatically makes it full screen. The only thing not automated is the inane UWin wireless login...
If anyone has any use for these scripts, let me know, I'd be happy to pass them along, though I'm not sure how good they are.
So, tomorrow is day one of the show, my fingers are crossed extremely tight. I think everything looks and sounds good when its running, so we'll see how my little patches hold over the course of the next 10 days.
Also, I had to write this while it was still in my mind... I heard a very small part of Vinyl Cafe today, and on it, Stuart had called the wrong number while trying to reach someone in Windsor to give them some kind of official recognition for bringing their kids to the Yukon in a car from Windsor as a summer vacation. Instead, Stuart reached a 15 year-old kid whose parents had just separated and whose dad has lost his job at Ford and that this kid was going to have to move and leave all his friends behind. It was incredibly touching in an inexplicable way. At random, this kid was called by someone dialing the wrong number, but in a few short minutes he unloaded what seemed to be 1000 pounds from his back while talking at Stuart's request about "the most important thing happening in his life right now." Connection is incredible.
