I've finally got around to taking some photos of the installation of Collapse/Relapse at Artcite... As well, I've shot a video, documenting the work, which I'll upload soon. Documentation seems difficult... is it important to see the work in the context of a projection (inevitably worse quality, due to low-light responsiveness of the video camera to which I have access)?... or are screen captures of the video in action enough?
Here are the technical notes on the work...
Collapse/Relapse uses data culled from the Internet to re-process and modulate video. The source video is an extended commercial for Chrysler's Town and Country minivan. The video processing is a visualization of online discussions of job loss and the auto industry. The data used for modulating the video is an estimate of the amount of these online discussions. The system continually pulls in this data and text from websites and search results and then uses Max/MSP/Jitter to parse the real-time data and modulate the video in response.
