Aside from all the commercialism and money making halloween synergist ventures (I.E. Cedar point and Halloween working together for "Hallowed Wekends") Today is still my favourite fabricated holiday of the year. As it has approached I found myself reflecting as to why it is as such.
Sure I like to be scared, I like the asthetic qualities of all that is creepy crawly but I think the more sophisticated reason is the idea of the communal that halloween brings about.
I think you can tell how healthy a community is by the ritual of Halloween. It is one night out of the year people agree upon and take it upon themselves to buy overly priced dwarfed candy to distrubute to the neighbourhood kiddies out of their own reciprocated good will.
So as long as people are willing to put money into the enjoyment of youngsters collectively one night a year for a rationally ridiculous tradition- I would argue that we are still in pretty good shape.
Once you start noticing more grumps who turn off their lights we may need to reevaluate the situation
