»nostalgia through consumerism

March 26, 2007, 4:41 pm

I was in my kitchen and there was some brown sugar being stored in an old peanut butter container - older than I can remember the Kraft peanut butter having such a logo. It made me think that it was strange that I could remember the range of peanut butter jars we've had, and also how many reused containers line our cupboards. There's expired medicine and fabric softener from when I used to play soccer. My memories of my youth are framed by products and their (as well as my) history is lining the shelves and cupboards in my house.

I think there is something to investigate here - that is, a sense of history and nostalgia through consumerism. Old home movies are highlighted with Christmas and birthday celebrations, gifts abound. Something to look into, maybe there's some text to sort through in No Logo.

P.S. officially accepted into the MA Communications & Social Justice program at University of Windsor. woo!
