I've been trying to test the stability of the sound part of the RSS work for the January show... So far, I think it's worked steadily for max 3 hours, but usually less. It seems that the Max patch will stop talking to Ableton Live without periodically being reminded that that was what it was doing in the first place or Live will just kick out. While the screenshot above is currently using random numbers, I was testing with MIDI being sent directly from the QC patch I've been working with to generate the visuals. I've added a sprite displaying some of the blog text to that QC patch, which adds another element that seems to emphasize the kinetics of the background image as well.
My testing is basically just running the sound until something crashes. I've been living with this sound for the last few days, though usually very quietly and in the background. Last night when I had finally given up, I had phantom sounds in my brain; I kept thinking the program/sound was still running in the background.
I've also been attempting to get the Live patch to record on command from MIDI being sent from Max. However, this only seems to force a crash even faster than without. The idea would be to record room noises during the installation, allowing them to build up over time to play along with the original sound... Maybe Live isn't the answer for this, though it would be nice to keep all audio contained in there... or maybe there is no reason to have this addition to the installation. I haven't really thought much about it yet, instead concentrating almost entirely on just seeing if the program will stay on without crashing.
The other option will be to attempt to find/write an Applescript to relaunch Live or Max if they crash, though preferably I would just get them stable enough to run autonomously for the length of the installation (or at least one day at a time).
Otherwise, Christmas was great, though we didn't have a chance to see our friends, Jeff and Kristina, the time went by too quickly. School starts again soon, but in the meantime, I'll enjoy having the luxury of no schedule whatsoever.
