Yesterday, blackhole factory came to give an artist talk at LeBel. It was exciting and inspiring to say the least and there was a good turnout to the talk - not always a guarantee in visual arts. Their work is very performative and in some ways their work feels closer to The London Apartments than any artwork I'm doing right now. I can see the connections being made and there is something deeply moving about the physicality of what they do. On a more technical note, their work is intriguing and refreshing, dealing with and processing information sources through a (sometimes) violent and interactive approach, that is, through their own responses in an ongoing dialogue with the technology and one another.
Their performative works are very engaging, but still I have a want to be removed from my own artwork, that is, to avoid it becoming something personal. Where my music has always felt like a very personal starting place, the work that I'm interested in now has more to do with being in the public and being unattached from me.
The 1/2 hour crit that we were able to schedule was unbelievably helpful. Though the work I was able to show was far from complete, I'm quite sure that having this bit of time to spend with these folks who are so well versed in Max/MSP/Jitter will end up saving me potentially a month of research. Best of all, I think I have a good idea of where to go for my first grad show in January.
On and entirely different note, we’ve nearly completed a mix of our favourite songs for a dear friend whom we extend our warmest hugs and brightest wishes.
