I spent the last few days in Terre Haute, Indiana at the Humanities and Technology Association conference, Sustainable Transformations. It was my first presentation at a conference and I think it went quite well - I spoke about using new media to illustrate data, information and relationships that could facilitate dialogue surrounding environmental conditions.
There were lots of really interesting ideas spread around over the course of the conference and I think that some of these new ideas will find their way into my dialogue and understanding about what I think I want to do with my own work.
I was also lucky enough to see Helen and Newton Harrison (this image is one of their works - Future Garden Part 1: The Endangered Meadows of Europe) speak about some of their larger works based in Europe as well as a new piece they're proposing for Terre Haute and the surrounding area's watershed that will involve planting enough trees to potentially change the weather and climate of the area. Newton offered some incredible advice:
1. Go where no one else is
2. Do the obvious
3. Do no harm
The Harrisons were amazingly inspiring, brilliant and had I travelled to Terre Haute only to hear them speak, it would have been worthwhile. The other connections I made and the new ideas that I heard were just bonuses.
In other news, my Macbook MagSafe power adapter melted near the power converter part. I had to order a new one, and just in time, the electrical tape solution seemed to be failing on my original one. My Bluetooth in the Macbook has also been acting funny, though dumping the preferences and restarting the computer seems to help. Depending on technology is expensive.
